In This Course, You'll

  • Get excited to learn how motivation and fun can make experiences more engaging, useful, and rewarding. With gamification, you take what makes games compelling and apply it to everything from app design to internal training to meet both organizational and user needs. The results speak for themselves. Starbucks reported that members of its gamified rewards program generated 57% of the company's U.S. sales, while Duolingo, famous for its gamification system, helps over 50 million daily users learn new languages. In this course, you'll learn how to use motivators like achievement and competition to help people reach meaningful goals and enjoy themselves doing it. You already understand gamification intuitively, like when you track your daily steps, claim a loyalty reward, or keep a streak going on an app. If you're exploring gamification for the first time or you're a senior designer looking for a reliable process to gamify your product, you'll get the skills to build systems that support learning and build healthy habits.

  • Make yourself invaluable as you step from user-centered design into player-centered design, where success isn't just about people being able to use your product, but about them wanting to. What engages one person won't engage another, so you'll use Bartle's four player types (Socializers, Explorers, Achievers, Killers) to classify your users, conduct demographic research, and build personas that inform design decisions for large player populations. You'll apply Daniel Pink's autonomy-mastery-meaning framework to match motivation to task complexity, and use the Fogg Behavior Model (trigger, ability, and motivation) to diagnose why an intended behavior isn't happening so you can address the right factor. To make sure your mechanics keep users coming back, you'll test with real people, refine until the system works for them, and monitor their motivation across the user lifecycle to keep engagement strong as they grow and change. AI makes it possible to bolt game mechanics onto anything, but it can't tell you whether they'll actually motivate your players. This course teaches the human judgment, player research, and ethics that decide whether gamification works or backfires.

  • Gain confidence and credibility as you tie design decisions to business objectives and build ethical, player-centered systems. You'll diagnose the problem gamification should solve, understand stakeholder expectations, and translate both into a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound) mission tied to a concrete, measurable objective. You'll also learn how to tell the difference between helping people make better choices and pushing them in ways that are, or feel, manipulative. Through hands-on activities and real-world examples from Nike and LinkedIn, you'll gain a practical toolkit for designing gamification that's engaging, ethical, and durable.

UX Designer

I have worked in computer games for over 20 years but have shifted my focus to UX Design in the last 7. This course was well-designed and the instructor has a good grasp of the subject matter. For myself, the value of this course was that it helped define gamification for me and will be instrumental in helping me apply my game design experience to integrate gamification into UX Design where appropriate.
