Your Speaker and Industry Expert
Alan Dix is Professor Emeritus at Cardiff Metropolitan University and Swansea University, where he was previously Director of the Computational Foundry, a £31m investment by the University, Welsh Government and European Union to create a place that nurtures fundamental digital research that makes a difference to real lives.
Alan has worked in Human–Computer Interaction for more than 35 years, including being co-author of one of the major international textbooks in the area. Alan has also authored numerous articles in topics from the design of menus, to bias in AI and rural technology.
His career has included university roles across the UK, dot-com era start-ups, and 8 years working for Talis, an innovative EdTech company. In 2013, he walked 1600 km around Wales as an exploration of technology in the physical and social margins.
Alan has worked on the boundaries of HCI and AI since the late 1980s including the earliest publication (in 1992) warning of the dangers of bias in black-box machine learning systems, applying genetic algorithms to submarine design and an intelligent internet interface start-up. In the 1990s, he co-authored an AI textbook deliberately designed to be accessible to those without a technical background, and a (substantially extended!) new edition of this, "Artificial Intelligence: Humans at the Heart of Algorithms", was published in 2025. He's currently working on a shorter book, AI for HCI, which will be available in September 2026.
