How This Course Will Help Your Career

Interactive systems are more than just functional. If we hope to engage more effectively with our users, user experience is crucial. To create successful user experiences, we need to know how humans think and feel.

But there is more to thought than just rational, conscious deliberation. Many of our decisions and feelings are based on complex subconscious processes. And not everyone thinks in precisely the same way. There are differences in the levels of multi-tasking people might be comfortable with, or for example, the extent to which their learning styles are visual versus aural, kinesthetic and so on. As designers, it will also help us to understand human error and how emotion affects our interactions.

What You Will Learn

  • Thinking and action

  • Human error

  • Thought in the world

  • Experience and emotion

  • Hierarchy of needs

  • Emotion in technology

  • Theories of emotion, motivation and experience

  • Transforming experience

  • Extended episodic experience

Throughout the course, the well-respected author and professor of Human-Computer Interaction, Alan Dix, will give valuable insights into the basics of thought and emotion. He will also touch on how these factors influence us as designers of interactive systems.

Portfolio Project

In the “Build Your Portfolio: Thought and Emotion Project”, you’ll find a series of practical exercises that will give you first-hand experience in applying what we’ll cover. If you want to complete these optional exercises, you’ll create a series of case studies for your portfolio which you can show your future employer or freelance customers.
